Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to carry out feedlot operationsAll work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, work health and safety, animal welfare and biosecurity legislation and codes or practice and sustainability practices.This unit applies to corporate, small scale or opportunity lot feeding of cattle, sheep and goats.This unit applies to individuals who work under broad direction and take responsibility for their own work. They complete routine activities and work in a range of known contexts.In addition to legal responsibilities, all units of competency dealing with animals in the AHC Training Package have the requirements for animals to be handled humanely to minimise stress and discomfort.No occupational licensing, legislative or certification requirements are known to apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace and/or simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Assessors must satisfy current standards for RTOs.

Element: Prepare to work with livestock feed
  • Check work to be undertaken from work program and confirm with supervisor where necessary.
  • Identify work health and safety hazards, assess risks and apply suitable control measures
  • Select, use and maintain suitable personal protective equipment
  • Select, check and maintain tools and equipment suitable for the work to be undertaken
  • Identify environmental impacts of undertaking work, assess likely outcomes and, if necessary, take responsible action
  • Calibrate scales and containers to be used for measurements
  • Identify ingredients from instructions and obtain from storage locations
  • Measure ingredients in the specified ratios and quantities
  • Blend ingredients adequately and hygienically in the manner specified using appropriate equipment
  • Carry out grinding, where required, in the manner specified and using appropriate equipment
